May 4: COVID-19 Update

As an organization and community, The Glebe is an active member and partner of LeadingAge, an association supporting not-for-profit senior living providers, such as continuing care retirement communities, skilled nursing, assisted living and other older adult or senior living service types.  The mission of LeadingAge is to be the trusted voice of aging. The Glebe is a proud member and support the ongoing advocacy LeadingAge provides as it relates to the current COVID 19 crisis.

In a recent blog post by LeadingAge’s CEO Katie Smith Sloan advocated for PPE and support of skilled nursing facilities and senior living providers across the nation.  Ms. Sloan stated, “It is important that we do not lose the wisdom as the weeks unfold and our days run together and become a blur.  This is a devastating time, no doubt about it.  But it is also a time rich in possibilities for growth and change.”

The Glebe’s leadership team hopes our team and community members will take the opportunity to better understand the lessons we can learn and how we can become stronger in our mission and as a community.  The leadership team understands and appreciates the frustration each of you feel as the days and weeks continue under the stay at home order is in effect all while our community continues to hold strong in the guidance and barriers placed to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

COVID-19 Situational Surveillance

As of May 4, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reports 2,700 hospitalizations and 684 Statewide deaths due to COVID-19. There are currently 81 known cases in Roanoke City, 57 in Roanoke County and 28 in Botetourt.  Currently, Virginia is reporting 1,443 combined number of confirmed positive patients, and patients whose test results are pending in licensed nursing facilities.

Daily updates from VDH and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show the reality of this virus and its devastating toll. The front page of the Sunday Roanoke Times stated: “7 Die as COVID-19 Outbreak Hits Roanoke Nursing Home.”

The leadership team expresses its sadness for those who have passed and their family members, and the heartbreak the health care workers in that nursing facility must be feeling.

The team is grateful for our team members, our residents and their families. While tomorrow is never a given, we can continue with our best practices and hold ground against this devastating and ever-changing virus.
