Beyond the shelter, the trail becomes a more traditional hiking trail that connects with the Appalachian Trail and McAfee Knob, one of the most photographed spots along the trail.

When you paddle Carvins Cove, you’ll enjoy a laid-back adventure with plenty of great spots for fishing and taking in gorgeous views.

Saddle up your mountain bike. Mountain bikers from around the world travel to the Roanoke area to bike the popular Carvins Cove, a 12,700-acre natural preserve. With over 60 miles of multi-use trails, Carvins Cove is divided into “the lowers,” a set of beginner-friendly trails and “the uppers,” a set of more advanced trails.
Bike the Roanoke Valley Greenways. If you’re looking for a smooth ride with 30 miles of amazing views, check out the bike trails along the Roanoke Valley Greenway. The trail offers great spots to stop for a picnic as well as playgrounds for the grandkids to enjoy.

Riders on ATVs, motorbikes and mountain bikes are welcome to visit the trail system during open season from April through November.
Take a scenic drive. A scenic drive by car or motorcycle is a great way to enjoy spectacular Blue Ridge Mountain views at your own pace. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469-mile scenic drive through the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.
