Older adults hiking the Appalachian trail

Hike the Appalachian Trail. Hiking the Appalachian Trail is a bucket list item for many outdoor enthusiasts, and hikers enjoy some of the best access points to the trail in the Roanoke Valley. The Catawba Greenway is a great starting point with dramatic views and bird-watching opportunities along a wheelchair-accessible trail leading to a picnic shelter. Beyond the shelter, the trail becomes a more traditional hiking trail that connects with the Appalachian Trail and McAfee Knob, one of the most photographed spots along the trail.

Paddle scenic waterways. Virginia’s Blue Ridge is a playground for those who love the water! There’s something for canoers and kayakers of all skill levels on a variety of rivers and waterways. When you paddle Carvins Cove, you’ll enjoy a laid-back adventure with plenty of great spots for fishing and taking in gorgeous views.

Go camping. A camping trip is fun for all ages and a great way to enjoy a weekend getaway or a memorable trip with the whole family. Whether you’re seeking a backpacking adventure or prefer “glamping” in a luxury RV, you’ll find a perfect spot for camping in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

Saddle up your mountain bike. Mountain bikers from around the world travel to the Roanoke area to bike the popular Carvins Cove, a 12,700-acre natural preserve. With over 60 miles of multi-use trails, Carvins Cove is divided into “the lowers,” a set of beginner-friendly trails and “the uppers,” a set of more advanced trails.

Older adults taking a break from mountain biking

Bike the Roanoke Valley Greenways. If you’re looking for a smooth ride with 30 miles of amazing views, check out the bike trails along the Roanoke Valley Greenway. The trail offers great spots to stop for a picnic as well as playgrounds for the grandkids to enjoy.

Play a round of disc golf. Disc golf is a growing sport gaining lots of traction in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. It’s a great way to experience the outdoors while working on your skills and enjoying a bit of friendly competition. Check out a variety of Roanoke area disc golf courses at Fishburn Park, Highland Park, Mayflower Park and more.

Hit the trails in your ATV. Kick up some dirt and enjoy the thrill of riding the South Pedlar ATV Trail System with a looping network of 19 miles of trails in the Bedford area. Riders on ATVs, motorbikes and mountain bikes are welcome to visit the trail system during open season from April through November.

Take a scenic drive. A scenic drive by car or motorcycle is a great way to enjoy spectacular Blue Ridge Mountain views at your own pace. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469-mile scenic drive through the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Enjoy some of the best mountain views in the world as well as iconic landmarks such as Mabry Mill and Peaks of Otter along the route.
