COVID-19 Baseline Testing Timeline & FAQs

Timeline
  • On June 29, The Glebe began baseline testing of all residents and team members in the assisted living, memory care and health care areas. The goal of the testing, which is mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Roanoke/Alleghany Health Department, is to ensure the safe re-opening of the community.
  • As part of this testing, 181 tests were administered. On July 4, The Glebe’s management team received notification that four team members tested positive. These team members are asymptomatic and are self-quarantining at home.
  • On July 5, test results indicated that one memory care resident and one health care resident are positive for COVID-19. These residents are also asymptomatic and self-quarantining in an isolation unit.
  • One additional team member tested positive on July 6. This team member is also asymptomatic and self-quarantining at home.
  • As of July 8, The Glebe management team has received 100% of the test results for residents. One test is still pending for an ancillary team member and is expected back within 24 hours.
  • Beginning on July 4, The Glebe’s management team conducted contact tracing to determine who could have potentially come in contact with anyone who tested positive for COVID-19. That tracing was completed on July 6. As a result, 30 independent living residents were tested and all were negative.
  • Per CMS guidelines, the second round of baseline testing for all team members and residents in assisted living, memory care and health care was completed July 6. All of these tests were negative.
  • The five team members and two residents who tested positive for COVID-19 were tested again on July 6 and 7. All seven tests administered on July 6 and 7 were negative. Per CMS, all of these cases are deemed recovered after receiving two negative COVID-19 tests within a 24-hour period. Team members are cleared to return to work. Residents are no longer be on isolation but will remain in their current room until all baseline testing is complete.
  • Per the local health department, assisted living and memory care residents and team members are no longer required to test a third time. The third round of baseline testing for health care residents and team members was conducted July 13. On July 19, all tests were returned with negative results.
  • The Glebe is now in the re-opening process to include small group activities, limited communal dining and eventually indoor visitation with appropriate precautions taken.
Frequently Asked Questions
  • Why are you doing this testing if no one is sick?
    • The Glebe is required to test all residents and team members in assisted living, memory care and health care in order to move toward allowing family members to visit their loved ones and to increase socialization for residents. The management team fully understands that wellness is defined not only by physical status but also social wellbeing. Therefore, we are working diligently to complete testing which will enable us to make changes related to communal dining, group activities and family visits.
  • Am I going to get sick?
    • The Glebe’s management team is doing everything we can to prevent the spread of the virus and is working closely with the local health department. A detailed baseline testing plan was submitted that outlined testing and response protocol. That plan is being executed now to help mitigate the spread of the virus. Team members who tested positive are self-quarantining at home until they receive two negative test results. Residents who tested positive are self-quarantining in an isolation unit. All positive cases are asymptomatic. Had the baseline testing not been completed, these individuals may never have known they indeed had COVID-19. Again, out of an abundance of caution we conducted these tests with the hopes of reuniting our residents with their loved ones.
  • Should visitation be limited again for independent living residents? Can we leave campus?
    • The Glebe’s management team is urging independent living residents to return to the “Stay Home Stay Safe” self-quarantining guideline for the next seven days. This means independent living common areas and dining venues will be closed. When independent living residents leave their apartment, they should wear a mask, socially distance from others and frequently sanitize hands. No outside visitors will be allowed on the campus. If independent living residents leave campus, they should take all precautions noted above.
