Blue Ridge Living: Your Path to Wellness

Wellness is all about balance. At The Glebe, residents are encouraged to embrace a lifestyle that supports their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. With personalized programs, a vibrant community, and compassionate staff, The Glebe provides a thoughtfully designed mix of activities, services, and social opportunities to promote health, nurture independence, and bring joy to everyday life. Here are just some of the ways The Glebe helps residents achieve this balance.

Good for the Mind

Pursuing your passions and exploring new skills or interests — like learning a language or mastering a craft — can bring growth and inspiration at any stage of life. Similar to how exercise engages muscles to help improve your physical health, lifelong learning can have a similar impact on the brain.

Lifelong learning can significantly contribute to improving cognitive reserve, the brain’s ability to withstand damage that could otherwise lead to dementia1. Research suggests that education fosters the development of more synapses, the connections between brain cells that facilitate information processing. Additionally, it can enhance alertness, improve memory function and cognition, and promote socialization and human connection.

The best part about lifelong learning? There’s no wrong way to do it. As long as we’re acquiring new knowledge, it’s easier than ever to improve and achieve optimal brain health. Here at The Glebe, you can flex your mental muscle in a variety of ways. From our Glebe Scholar program to woodshop, book clubs and trivia nights, we provide a vast array of opportunities to keep the mind active and sharp, including our ever-popular Mental Muscle program. There are also volunteer opportunities available on and off campus.

Good for the Body

Physical activity at any age is crucial and can help manage different illnesses and chronic diseases. The good news: It’s never too late to start exercising. Even better news: The Glebe has exceptional amenities and wellness programs designed to keep you active (with ease!).

Regular exercise offers an abundance of benefits2, from enhancing overall health and lifting your mood to reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, improving bone strength, and boosting balance and coordination. The rewards are undeniable.

Our expert team of wellness coordinators, fitness instructors, and culinary experts focus on maintaining and improving your health in a friendly, encouraging environment. Even our modern fitness and aquatic center is managed by professionals from the National Institute for Fitness and Sport, a nonprofit organization that specializes in well-being for older adults.

Here’s a small sample of programs, amenities and services that help residents feel their best:

  • Johnson Aquatic Center with a heated indoor saltwater pool and hot tub
  • Modern fitness center and a team of certified trainers
  • Group exercise classes like Beginning Exercise, yoga, tai chi, and Gait and Balance
  • Scenic walking trails, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing at nearby parks and rec areas
  • Massage therapy services

Good for the Soul

What is good health if it means not feeling fulfilled? Part of what makes The Glebe so special is our holistic approach to wellness. We recognize that true well-being encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual health. Our programs offer opportunities for spiritual growth, cultural enrichment, and creative expression.

Whether it’s through creative arts classes, joining resident committees, volunteering on- or off-campus, meditation, community service, prayer groups, Bible studies, or simply spending time in our on-campus chapel, residents at The Glebe find ways to connect with their inner selves, foster meaningful relationships, and make a positive impact on the world around them.

Did you know: Research has shown that volunteering offers significant health benefits? Volunteering among adults age 60 and over3, reported better physical health than nonvolunteers. Other studies have found that volunteering also leads to lower rates of depression and anxiety. This is because volunteering reduces stress and increases positive emotions by releasing dopamine. By dedicating time to helping others, volunteers often experience a sense of purpose and appreciation — both given and received — which can have a significant stress-reducing effect. Reduced stress, in turn, can decrease the risk of various physical and mental health problems, including heart disease, stroke, depression, anxiety, and general illness.
