March 23: COVID-19 Update

The Glebe management team will issue a weekly summary related to the community’s situational status as well as operational updates related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19). If you have any questions related to the information in this update, please call 540-591-2100. The Glebe administration and staff continue to act with an abundance of caution for the protection of our residents, their families and our team members. As this virus is becoming more widespread in the U.S. and around the world, we continue to take appropriate precautionary measures by following the recommendations promulgated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Situational Update: On Thursday, March 19, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital announced its first positive test result for the Coronavirus. The individual who tested positive was known to reside in the Allegheny/Botetourt region. We do not have any further information surrounding this case. Please note: the Virginia Department of Health is actively involved. We will keep you updated as we learn more.

The Glebe continues to follow CMS guidance and Restrict all visitors:

Restricted Entry: As mandated by CMS, entry into the community is restricted for all visitors (including family) and non-essential health care personnel with the sole exception being certain compassionate care situations, such as end-of-life care.

Screening:Decisions about visitation during an end-of-life situation will be made on a case by case basis, and will include careful screening of the visitor (including clergy, bereavement counselors, etc.) for fever or respiratory symptoms. Any visitors with symptoms of a respiratory infection (fever, cough, shortness of breath, or sore throat) will not be permitted to enter the facility at any time, even in end-of-life situations.

PPE: During end-of-life care situations, The Glebe will require all family and visitors to perform hand hygiene, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as facemasks, and visitation will be limited to the resident’s room or other location designated by the community.

  • Residents who leave the community will need to access the community through the main entrance.
  • All residents who re-enter the community will be screened including a temperature check.

We will continue to discourage unnecessary travel, remind residents to practice social distancing and perform frequent hand hygiene.

Update:

We are aware of residents are allowing visitors and family members into the community. We understand how important family and friends are, especially during a time of anxiety and uncertainty. However, we must be diligent in protecting our community and ask everyone to refrain from personal visits. We are readily available to assist with alternate methods of communication. Please contact Robin Ward, resident services director at 540-591-2180 for assistance.

We will continue to screen all staff at the beginning of their shift for fever and respiratory symptoms. Actively taking their temperature and documenting the absence of shortness of breath, new or change in cough and sore throat. If they are ill, we will have them put on a facemask and self-isolate at home.

Update:

We have increased our screening process to include further questioning related to travel and symptoms.  We are also checking with staff in health care, assisted living, and memory care mid-shift to ensure signs and symptoms are not present.

The Glebe-Independent Living Changes

Leaving the Community:

Update:  The Glebe residents continue to have the right to enter and exit our community as they wish.  However, we are now limiting and requiring access to the community through our Main Entrance. All exterior doors will be locked. If you leave the community for any reason you must re-enter through the Main Entrance and be screened.

Travel:  If you travel outside the area for any reason please notify the Clinic Nurse Tammy Muncey by calling 591-2198.  Tammy will do an initial screening and you will be asked to self-quarantine for 14 days as we monitor for respiratory signs and symptoms.  If symptoms occur, we advise you to self-isolate at home, contact your healthcare provider and immediately notify the nursing staff.

Please know that we will continue to monitor the CDC and CMS guidance and will lift restrictions as soon as it is prudent to do so.

The intent of the above-outlined changes is solely for the protection of our residents, their families and our team members. Our focus continues to be prevention and to build barriers against the spread of this virus.  The Glebe administration and staff very much appreciate your cooperation and understanding.  If you have any questions and/or concerns, please reach out to a member of management in the community. As additional information develops, we will review and revise protocols restrictions as soon as it is prudent to do so.
