Visitation and Community Life Update

The Glebe hosted three COVID-19 vaccine clinics in the past two months. As a result, approximately 96% of residents in all levels of care and 40% of team members are fully vaccinated—which, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) means two weeks has passed since receiving the last required dose. Because of the success of these clinics, The Glebe’s management team feels comfortable implementing new guidance issues this week by federal health officials.

On March 8, the CDC issued its first set of recommendations on activities that people who are fully vaccinated can safely resume. LifeSpire of Virginia responded with a letter outlining the organization’s recommendations following vaccines and in keeping with the Virginia Department of Health and CDC recommendations.

That guidance is as follows:

Currently, mask-wearing procedures will not change in any public areas of the community. The mask-wearing procedure will also remain the same for all team members and visitors entering the community.

Also, on March 11, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) provided an update and revised guidance related to visitation to neighborhoods like our healthcare area. The CDC also issued updated guidance that mirrored the CMS guidance.

The following outlines those updates:

During the pandemic, guidance from the CMS has limited indoor visitation for our healthcare residents when the COVID-19 county positivity rate is higher than 10% or when there is an outbreak in the community. While federal health officials recognize that relaxing current restrictions on indoor visitation might increase the risk for COVID-19 transmission, vaccination can mitigate some of these risks. Therefore, the guidance stated that expanding visitation has substantial benefits to residents.

What does this mean for The Glebe?
Healthcare Visitation

Effective Wednesday, March 17, The Glebe will begin visitation in healthcare.

The Visitation guidance requires:

  1. All visitors will be screened prior to entrance.
  2. All residents and visitors will receive an explanation of the associated risks with visitation so they can make an informed decision about participation.
  3. All visitors and residents should still wear a well-fitting facemask.
  4. Maintain a six-foot distance between residents and visitors, especially if participants have not been vaccinated.
  5. If the visitors and residents have been fully vaccinated, they may visit in close contact.
  6. Hand hygiene should be performed by the resident and visitors before and after contact.

At this time, the number of visitors is not limited. Due to limited space in healthcare rooms, residents and visitors should be mindful to allow for social distancing.

Assisted Living and Memory Support Visitation

Visits to assisted living and memory support continue seven days a week.

Independent Living Visitation

Based on the updated guidance related to fully vaccinated individuals, The Glebe is no longer restricting the number of visitors to independent living apartments/cottages. Following the guidance related to facial coverings and social distancing is recommended for anyone visiting who is not fully vaccinated.

Please note these visitation guidelines may change. Indoor visitation will be permitted for all residents except as noted below:
  • Indoor visitation for unvaccinated residents will be limited solely to compassionate care situations if the COVID-19 county positivity rate is higher than 10% and less than 70% of residents in the community are fully vaccinated.
  • Indoor visitation should be limited solely to compassionate care situations, for:
  • Vaccinated and unvaccinated residents with COVID-19 infection until they have met criteria to discontinue transmission-based precautions.
  • Vaccinated and unvaccinated residents in quarantine until they have met criteria for release from quarantine.
  • The Glebe will follow guidance from state and local health authorities and CMS on when visitation should be paused should an outbreak occur in the future.
Community Life Update

The Glebe has gradually added additional programming to include, trips, videos, lectures and events as COVID-19 restrictions have gradually lifted. To support our mission of vibrant living, programming will expand in the coming weeks.

Some of the recent and upcoming programming additions will consist of:

  • Celtic band celebration on Saint Patrick’s Day
  • Excursion to Glazed Bisque Pottery
  • Carol Edwards concert series
  • Dinner excursion to Montanos
  • Comedian Melissa Douty

As the weather warms, culinary services will also resume the weekly Farmer’s Market on the front porch. Residents are encouraged to re-engage in community activities and rekindle those gatherings that have been missed over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Glebe’s team is excited and looks forward to moving into the next phase of life and community.
