Flash Mob Breaks Out in the Alleghany Dining Room

Every other Saturday, residents at The Glebe gather for a resident-run series titled, “Saturday Matinee.” The popular, well-attended event features a playlist of YouTube videos for resident enjoyment.

At a recent gathering, the playlist featured videos of flash mobs—large, public gatherings at which people perform an unusual or seemingly random act and then disperse. Many in attendance had never heard of flash mobs, but by the end they had agreed to try it out for themselves.

Several residents gathered in secret to practice. When they decided they were ready, the organizer—Dee Copenhaver—contacted the community’s culinary and resident services teams to pick the best time to execute.

On Friday, April 16, when singing broke out during the dinner hour, fellow diners were treated to the flash mob rendition of, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.” Many residents not in on the surprise event joined in to the song.
