April 10: COVID-19 Update

In last week’s update, we outlined the Governor’s Executive Order for all Virginians to “house in place” and stay home. This action is unprecedented in our state and signifies the seriousness of COVID-19. This week, I want share startling information about an outbreak in a Richmond area nursing and rehabilitative community that was recently mentioned by the Governor.

The nursing and rehab facility located in Henrico County has an outbreak of COVID-19 that began in March within the facility.  Since the confirmed outbreak, the facility in conjunction with the VDH, tested every resident to determine who was positive for COVID-19.  On April 6, local news released an update stating 35 of the 88 residents who tested positive were asymptomatic carriers showing no sign of being ill.

This Richmond facility is a demonstration that COVID-19 can spread rapidly when individuals without symptoms unknowingly infect many others with whom they come into contact. Along this same line of thought, a recent social media post suggests, “Do not change your behavior to avoid being infected.  Assume you are infected and change your behavior to avoid transmitting.” Please keep this information in the forefront of your daily living as we continue to request all residents stay in their apartment or cottage and maintain social distancing practices.

As a note: Each day during mail delivery times, residents are seen gathering outside the library and the administrative office suites. While I understand getting mail is a daily necessity, I would encourage each of you to defer mail retrieval to an alternate time of the day. This may help minimize the number of residents gathering at the same time.

The Glebe’s management team continues to assess the ever-changing landscape of prevention and develop strategies to sustain barriers against this virus. The Institute for Health Metrics has predicted the peak in the number of cases will occur during the next two weeks. Below, you will find some additional changes to help improve our efforts during those next two weeks.
