The Botetourt County high school engineering team, “Off the Grid,” had a meet and greet August 1 at The Glebe, a LifeSpire of Virginia continuing care retirement community. The team brought their award-winning turbine model and shared with The Glebe’s residents the process of creating and building the design as well as the challenges they faced along the way. The model, a 4-foot highly efficient turbine, took first place in The National KidWind Challenge competition in Anaheim, California, by more than doubling the challenge’s previous energy production record.
The Botetourt team consists of five high school students who opted to build their own generator from scratch rather than use the stock KidWind generator most teams use. Fifty-five teams from across the U.S. and the Virgin Islands competed in the challenge. KidWind Challenge is the premier wind energy conference in the world and includes all major wind companies and wind developers.
