A Clifton Forge native, Maybelle Payne, was living in Kentucky when her husband, Gabe, passed away. It was comforting to move back to the area and The Glebe, especially since her family was so close by. Maybelle now lives in a Fairview Cottage filled with treasures collected over many years. Stories lurk in every corner. They beckon from photographs of Maybelle with Gabe, a physician, on a medical mission trip in Africa to a photo of her shaking hands with President Jimmy Carter. She tells fascinating stores about her life and about several interesting pieces of furniture in her home. “People always like hearing about this dresser that reputedly belonged to Al Capone.” she says. Her eyes sparkled with mischief as she points out the locked drawers, musing over what he might have kept in this chest. Her surroundings and family are a great comfort to her and so is The Glebe’s life care program. “It feels like home here,” say Maybelle.
