Presented by Tom Copenhaver

On a day when many of us remember the loss of life and devastation resulting from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, retired U.S. Navy Captain Tom Copenhaver shares a brief history of the aircraft carrier with a focus on the modern super carrier. Tom was a member of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps and his career highlights include serving as the Chief of Staff for Naval Legal Service Command and a tour at the Pentagon as a Military Assistant to the General Counsel of the Department of Defense. Tom’s operational tours include an assignment on the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69) as the Discipline Officer and Brig Officer, and a period of temporary additional duty as the Legal Department Head on the USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74). Additionally, he served as the Group Judge Advocate of Amphibious Group TWO. This decorated naval veteran has served overseas at the Yokosuka Naval Base and as an Associate Professor in the Department of Leadership and Law at the U.S. Naval Academy. Tom, his wife Cathy (also a retired U.S. Navy Captain), and their sons reside in Salem and enjoy spending time with Tom’s parents, Bob and Mimi Copenhaver, residents of The Glebe.
