Professor Peter Wallenstein’s talk at The Glebe on Feb. 21 will focus on the young Virginia couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, and their legal journey against interracial marriage and life together. He will also address the changes in American life that their victory revealed, the changes it made possible, and the ways the story has been told in three films.
Wallenstein, professor of history at Virginia Tech, is an award-winning teacher and award-winning author. Before coming to Tech more than three decades ago he taught in New York, Canada, Japan, and Korea. His many books include: “Tell the Court I Love My Wife: Race, Marriage, and Law — An American History” (2002); “Race, Sex, and the Freedom to Marry: Loving v. Virginia” (2014); and “Cradle of America: A History of Virginia” (2nd edition, 2014).
