Widely considered one of the greatest songwriters in American history, Irving Berlin’s compositions form a large part of The Great American Songbook. From Alexander’s Ragtime Band, Always, and There’s No Business Like Show Business, to This Is the Army, Oh How I Hate To Get Up In the Morning, and God Bless America, Irving Berlin has written some of the most popular American music of all time. His lyrics were uncomplicated, simple, and direct, with his stated aim being to “reach the heart of the average American,” whom he saw as the “real soul of the country.” With memorable melodies, unbridled emotion and timeless lyrics, Berlin’s music is uniquely American and will no doubt be sung by many generations to come.
